The limited operational season is due to the fact that Hudson Bay is frozen for a good portion of the year. Bad for shipping - good for the polar bears. The route from there would be north and east through the arctic around the ungava penninsula and eventually to Newfoundland. Most of the year that route is either frozen or a maze of titanic destroying icebergs.
