Geos are constantly looking for "mapping tools" when logging drill core, especially when outcrop is rare and the only thing available is core. What it enables the geo to do, is essentially establish a sort of continuum in the geology from hole to hole. If chromite is present in distinct extensive layers or beds, they can be potentially used as valuable "marker horizons" from hole to hole. That is my best guess as to what has been referred to earlier today in a few posts. It is a tool which increases the geological knowledge of the host rocks and their continuity. Perhaps also, it may lead to a better understanding and location of their source.
