So is this fear mongering, legitimate concern with a real risk of events becoming true or something in between?

A question for those in the know: We have the FDIC in Canada. Is it a separate entity and it operates its own budgets or would it be helping out it's US counterpart? Are we going to see our banking fees/FDIC fees increased because of the failure of the US banks?
