Great post, Poly! I like the synergy you point out between DE1 and DE2.

As to the rock weighing discussion, I'd estimate rock goes about 2.5 tons per square meter; but obviously, it depends on what kind of minerals are present and in what proportion, but that's a ballpark figure for things laymen like me think of a just plain, old rock.
