my parents had borders. they were from holland, steve and dinah. i remember sitting with dinah as she tried to teach me dutch. steve never talked much about the war but once he told my dad that he ate tulip bulbs to survive.

we had lots of tulips in our garden. one day someone came in and chopped the heads off. dinah cried. as a 4 year old, i did not understand the significance of the tulip to her, and to steve.

today i plant daffodils every october on an expressway. i go out really early so i won't get arrested!!!! makes april look very pretty.

in fact, they're out now!!!
