Your example of trading a few shares and leaving a core gives one great freedom when you know that you are covered by the core and therefore will not miss a surge upward or a downtrend with the fun shares that you traded after a rise.... which you can now buy back with at a lower sp.  You are right about needing to feel comfortable doing this.  You have to do what is right for you.  Good points.
