There is no such thing as bad press

I was getting some new snow tires installed on Saturday morning and as I waited I looked at a national newspaper. It was interesting to see Conrad Black tear into Peter C Newman in the op ed section.

However I got quite a shock when there was a full page story on the front page of the business section about the mining sector and of course NOT. Placement is everything, content much less so. The fact we were there, it is read. Readers are not stupid they read between the lines and that article did not hurt us.

Let me give you another example. A friend of mine was working in marketing in Australia for a pet food company. They created a line of dog biscuits in the shape of posties (postal delivery men, almost extinct now). Well the postal union went balistic and walked off the job and the story hit the 11:00 news.

The next morning my chum was called into the president’s office to get dressed down. He simply said to the President, "when was the last time the company was on the 11:00 news?", turned around and walked out. There is no such thing as bad press, even ask Paris H.
