SD RRSP is self directed RRSP. let me see if i can get the math to work out here. Let's assume 12,000 shares at the cost of 73 cents. $8760 cost. i sugeest they sell 1/6 at 4.38
here is what i suggested;
sell 2000 at $4.38 = $8,760
In canada Taxable capital gain is 50% or .5x2000x(4.38-0.73) or $3650 gain and at say 40% tax rate you will owe $1460.
The next step I suggested was to transfer balance to SD RRSP. This is a 'Deemed sale' so you will owe tax
tax on the remaining 10000 shares would be 50%(10000(4.38-0.73)@40% or $7,300
Your total tax for 'selling' 12000 share would be $8760.
Now the good part... your RRSP contribution would be 10,000 x $4.38 or $43,800 and assuming the same 40% tax bracket the rrsp contributon would reduce taxes 'otherwise' payable by 43,800x40% or a WHOPPING $17,520
Your tax position would therefore be $1,460 + $7,300 - $17,520 or a potential reduction in taxes otherwise payable by $8,760
Summarizing sell, transfer, file tax return and at the end of the day you still own 5/6th of your share and the Government pays you a refund.
Hope this helps those north of the border
