I don't want to seem stupid, but I don't understand the price open/close, gap up/down thing at all. Does the opening price change with the very first trade? If the stock closes at $4 and re-opens at $2 for example, this means the market cap has been cut in half over-night with no stock changing hands? I don't get it.

 Help please!
