Coop,
I use TD Waterhouse but will be switching in the future if and when I sell my Noront shares. I have been at the level for the $9.95 trades for close to a year (10 or more per month) so the cost is managable. Still, there are times I have to cross trade some of my smaller share holdings just to keep that number up.
I will likely switch to CIBC as they have a $395 flat rate for 50 trades. The trades must be made in one year. After that the trades are 6.95 for the remainder of that year. A very good deal compared to the $1200 a year I need to pay at TD in order to maintain my 9.95 trading. I will be switching to them early next year.
I prefer to trade with the large banks for two reasons. One, the money can be quickly transfered back and forth between the brokerage account and my bank account. Two, the CIDC deposit protection. I am not sure if etrade has this protection - they might, but the majors are less likely to fold compared to the small ones.
