I've been upset about the decline of education even while I was in education classes where they were telling us that we should never teach phonics nor should we have the youngsters learn the ABC's by rote. The poor little kids were supposed to only learn to read by sight and the ABC's would come to them. What bologna!

No wonder American education is in the dumper. It used to rate as #1 in the world.
