the reason I know it is a story is that the logical end of your story is that at the end of the day your head would have been stuffed and would currently be hanging on the cave wall of some stag and doe and depending on how many bumps and welts were raised he the stag would be bragging about his multi point prize and how difficult it (you) were to bring to ground.....

now a real deer story which although not nearly as entertaining as Wolfs is a lesson on how not to drive on I15 .....

A few years back I found myself driving to Utah up I15. I had a two fold purpose. I was bringing a friends Mercedes SL up to their summer home outside Salt Lake and as my youngest had been visting their son for the past two weeks I figured to take a few days have a great drive and them fly back with my son. (note: you can take I15 from the Mexican border in San Diego straight up to Canada without stopping unless you need gas of course).

So.... it was about 11:00 pm about two hour north of Las Vegas on I15 when what do I see not twenty feet in front of me but a fifteen point stag just standing in my lane eyes all aglare daring me to come ahead. Well, thankfully there were no other cars nearby as without checking the next lane I did a salmon around the deer missing it by ..... that much.... Shaking like a leaf I slowed down to get a better picture of what was before me and when a three unit semi came up behind me I got behind him and stayed within thirty feet until the next rest stop. My logic was that if there was to be another deer on the road ahead the truck would catch it and not I. Smart huh.... nope

At the truck stop while trying to convince myself I really should not be ordering an old bushmills (I didn't) when I still had a few hours of driving to go and that my nerves would be fine with a cup of hot coffee the guy behind the counter asked was there anything wrong? I told him about my adventure and so he said that I had done the "deer salmon" which gave me brownie points. He went on to tell me how many people fail that maneuver or never get a chance to even try it and usually get towed into his place and if lucky with nothing more then a totaled front end.

As for my bright idea of hiding behind the semi to miss any deer he said .... very bad idea. It seems that when the semi's hit the deer if it is not a direct middle of the truck hit the deer actually travels alongside of the truck and when it reaches the rear of the semi is slingshot out the back at the speed of the truck and is shot directly into any vehicle that is hiding for protection behind the rig. So.... if you decide you do not want to rope a deer try the I15 deer salmon course it certainly will keep you awake on a late night drive....
