During all these discussions on the upcoming election, I am reminded more and more of the crisis that Cubans faced with the arrival of the "George Washington of Cuba" in the '60's.

Yes, that was the description of Fidel Castro by James Reston. a renowned columnist for the NY Times. Why anyone would quote the NY Times as a trusted source of information completely escapes me. (The slogan of the NYTimes is "All the news that's fit to print, but the truly knowledgeable people know that that it should really be "All the news that fits.") At one time there was a picture of Castro with the caption "I got my job through the New York Times". The wag that posted that was absolutely correct.

If you are old enough to recall the tragedy of what happened to Cuba, you will remember that not only were many lives destroyed, but many family relationships were permanently destroyed as a result of their differences regarding Castro and his promises. Castro continually denied being a Communist until after his successful take-over when he announced to the world that he WAS a Communist and had always been one.

The facts were there for those who cared enough to seek them out. Our State Department was riddled with Communist agents, but those who tried to tell us that were villified. (Check out what happened to Otto Otepka, one of several State Department officials who tried to warn us.)

If Americans elect a communist as president, we will face exactly the same thing. The upcoming election may possibly be the last free election we will ever have.

Be careful what you wish for. Change is not always a good thing.
