Communist Russia was recognized in the '30s. As soon as possible for the Communists, the educators came to America and entered the universities, where they obtained jobs in the English departments. Some time later, the English departments were completely taken over by the left. That is what happened to journalism in America.

The first demonstration of their power came with the complete destruction of Joseph McCarthy. Yeah! I know what most have to say about him, but the fact remains that he was an American hero during WWII, a man of outstanding moral character and a valiant member of the Senate. Once he attacked the Communists, he became fair game for the press. Once the KGB files were seen, it turns out that McCarthy's statement about "over 350 Communist agents in our State Department" (for which he was villified), was correct............357 were found and among them was the guy described by the press as "our bright young man in the State Department", Alger Hiss.
