I believe you are correct, as do many, many others, and that is why there appears to now be movement in suspending mark-to-market rules or amending them. The rules can serve to create additional momentum, down or up, and in a situation like we have it creates a vicious cycle of marking down, raising capital, marking down, raising capital..............
There is a better way to value long term assets even if they are partially tainted.
