I don't know if tomatoes are good in your neck of the woods but in San Diego they stink. If anyone can remember how good they used to be then you know of what I write. The beefsteak, remember that one?, deep red and rich with flavor.
So I tried growing my own in a sunny beach garden, result for the last three years? Lousy and no better than the storebought.
I couldn't figure for the longest time what had happened, why they have become so poor in flavor. I even tried the organic store.....same lousy flavor and texture.
Last week it finally occured to me.............Genetic engineering.
As most of you know, in order to grow more crops and develop insect resistant plants and fruits the scientists have for years been messing around with the genetics of the plants from cron to.....thats right tomatoes.
The reason a good tomatoe cannot be grown in my own garden is that even the seedlings and the seeds have been altered with the stupid genetic engineering. It is like eating red softened cardboard.
Is it to much to ask in life?, just to have a nice tomatoe?
