present the legal angle to this issue but here is a real personal take to the issue.
One of my son`s is in a grad program at one of the Nations most prestigious schools, he is working on his Phd in Biology (when it came to intelligence and my children the apples fell far from my tree). He recently had to give up on a project he had spent two years of 10 to 14 hour days, 6 to 7 days a week on. His project from the get go was a long shot but if it had worked it would defintely have helped us all, alas it was not to be.
Let`s assume it worked and some big pharma or biotech picked up on it and made it a commerical success charging us all for my son`s work. Should not he and his lab at his Univ be able to reap some of the rewards for his labor and intellect? Or since he was working with nature (?) should whoever has the resources be able to profit by it and to heck with who actually discovered it?
I should point out that my son is not a scientist for the money. Anyone who knows anything about biologist and the years they spend in getting that Phd know the goal is not financial. He just likes pure science and research and feels that he learned a lot from this project even if it was not the outcome he was looking for. However, I am of a different bent. I think that the Einstien`s, the Edison`s, the Curies, the Fish`s and Moore`s and yes my son are owed something and they should reap those rewards.
Certainly we all know the story of the inventor who after his invention is out we all say wow was that a simple idea - why didn`t I think of that?
Intellect is a rare commodity and it should be protected.
And that is my opinion
