could care less for couldn't care less

The point being, if one "could care less" about the topic one is commenting on, why would one go to the trouble of mentioning it?

This one has always bothered me...

If I say "I could care less about it" then I must care a little bit right now (but in the future I might care a bit less).

If I say "I couldn't care less about it" then that is usually (see below) tantamount to "I don't care about it." If I don't care about it at all why would I even make the comment other than perhaps to inform the listener. However, this one "wins" because it is accurately reflecting my sentiments whereas the first one ("could care less") probably isn't what I mean.

However, "I couldn't care less about it" could also imply "but in certain circumstances I might care more"!

It's better just to say the unambiguous "I don't care about it".

Anyone want to start on "its" versus "it's"? Better make it Off Topic though....

[Please count this one as ON topic because better checking for grammar and spelling makes posts easier to read in general.]
