I wish like all heck that you are right, but the expiration actually had a beneficial effect at the USPTO. Because it had expired, they gave everything the customary meaning instead of the broadest possible meaning. Not clear if that was necessary to get it passed prior art, but suspect it did help.

If it indeed was due to non-payment of fees, it may have been done on purpose.

There must be some place where we claim priority for each patent. That would be the base date that we would be working from. Don't think that is necessarily the same date as the application filing date.
