I think there is a much deeper strategy at play here, for better or worse, regarding the Barco ICs. Anything from testing the legal waters to see if they could use manuals and representative chips from 'chip families' to assert agaInst would-be infringers in future legal proceedings to save costs, etc., to more nefarious reasons. I think they knew what they were doing as this is not complex from a strategy standpoint IMO.
