Perhaps the solution would be for posters to offer opinions/conjecture in the form of a question, followed by a "The reason I ask....". Perhaps this is acceptable middle ground? It should make it clear that the poster is not proclaiming to be an expert on the matter, and accomplishes the desired objective.
