You can control a company without owning it (in the same way that you can control wealth without owning it).

You can own 1 share of stock without having control of a company

If you own stock you own a piece of that company. Otherwise, try explaining to the IRS when you sell any stock for a gain, that you don't owe tax because.....well, your not an owner.
