If the fruit is rotten then the people picking it are to blame...........
If the pickers permit the fruit (shares) to go off (declining share price) before deciding to sell then they only have themselves to blame for failing to take account of prevailing market conditions.
Blaming the tree (BoD) is so much easier than accepting personal responsibility for letting the fruit rot.
Continuing with your analogy, you would still attribute fault for drought (paucity of licenses), flood (repeated re-examinations), pestilence (alleged fraud), and any other natural disasters, to the tree, I very humbly suggest.
As to looking in a mirror, greed got me into this stock and greed keeps me in it, and it would be pure hypocrisy to try to attribute blame to anyone but myself for that decision, let alone try to blame the BoD.
