Last year ALL the BoD nominees received majority positive votes, under either system therefore nothing would have changed.

Alternatively, the BoD could offer more nominees than seats.

To nominate from the floor, as you suggest, has to be done correctly, and if the past is any indication as to the future I wouldn't count on it.
