Sorry for the lack of clarity in my posts Lambert. As you know, much to the disgust of shareholders, the lack of detail about licensing fees has always been a point of contention. Many of management’s business decisions and the vague news releases have also been criticized here.
The Agoracom board posts at that time reacted in disbelief. For some reason or another Sony had gotten off cheap with a sweetheart deal. The stock plummeted that day and closed at $1.11, unbelieveable to many after the signing of another electronics powerhouse. During the next several weeks the stock continued to drop and it has never really recovered again. Your eventual speculation of the actual size of the Sony deal, didn’t really surface until the next quarterly was reported, some months later. We never did really know how much of the licensing fees from that quarter actually came from Sony.
When I saw the link in ccraider’s post the other day, to the article from Morgan Lewis about how companies should fight patent trolls. I found the whole situation puzzling. I find they have on their list (p.17), that Sony paid $19.4 million dollars to us for their license. A fact PTSC never felt pertinent enough to share with its own shareholders. Had this information been made public. I believe the stock price would have continued to climb above the $2.25 intraday high it hit on 3/7/2006. Why did PTSC management decide to announce the Sony deal as a “http://www.morganlewis.com/pubs/fightingpatenttroll_gaybrickhollingshead20070927substantially discounted” license? Why have they done many of the things they’ve done?
Does any of this matter now? Not likely. However, as a shareholder who has been waiting for this company’s success for so many years, I continue to wonder, will they ever get it right? For some of the more recent shareholders this story means very little. You may not even be able to follow the timeline and the details. On the other hand, I’m sure there are some of you out there that can say “I didn’t know we received $19.4 million from Sony”.
