As you say, announcing a dividend distribution would indeed send the price higher. As such, it would negate the potential for making a substantial dent in the free trading.

Solution: Don't announce a dividend until such time that the significant dent has been made. In the meantime just place any excess income in a local/national high yield account - boring but safe.
