Thanks again. Looking again at MPEP 2295, it would appear that my possibilities 2,3 and 4 are "real". However, I could see the examiner opting for possibility 1 in spite of the MPEP guideline, if only to simplify his action and to enable him to be more responsive to the request for re-exam (which could serve as his justification).
