I think the point Mike was trying to make - rather poorly - was that the way the patents are written, the Variable Speed System Clock could be in the form of something other than a ring oscillator and the patents would still apply. The point is rather moot, in that there is no other form of VSSC known to exist today, and probably not in the future ( at which point the entire system would likely be so altered that the patents wouldn't apply anyway).
I do not necessarily agree with Mike's point in that when they say "said" Variable Speed System Clock, they are making specific reference to the (ring oscillator) VSSC addressed elsewhere in other claims of the patent or made reference to via reference to other patents where the specific form of VSSC is fully described.
Am I right Mike?
