Deloitte LLP’s acquisition of the government services portion of BearingPoint Inc. has created a major local player in the federal contracting sphere.

BearingPoint and Deloitte combined won $948 million in new federal contracts since October 2008

BearingPoint’s roots trace back to another Big Four accounting firm, KPMG LLP, which spun off its consulting unit in 1999. The business went public in 2001 and adopted the BearingPoint moniker in 2002.

Greg Baroni agrees. He’s CEO of Éclat Consulting LLC in McLean and was part of the KPMG team that spun off BearingPoint and took it public.

He argues the acquisition’s success will depend largely on how well Deloitte integrates legacy BearingPoint staffers into its much more complex, bureaucratic structure.

“Simplification is the word that comes to mind,” he said.
