I agree with Fut that these settlements can be easily concealed from the viewing public. If, for example, they were smart enough to set up accruals during the prior months, they could easily squirrel away huge chunks of funds for that could be due in a legal settlement. In my company, we had huge researves for all different types of eventualities so when they occurred, we didn't have to show big expenses in the quarter we got hit. Just reverse the accrual which is a balance sheet item and not a P&L item. Just a guess.
