the 584 was granted by Eng because, at the time, there was no prior art due to patent 4783734 not being issued until three months after the 584?

Or, is it that the USPTO is using the 4783734 to show that it is prior art to invalidate the 584? If so, how can it be prior when it came after?

Not sure where you were going with this....
