We have gone over it before, but I believe the bottom line is that the 'one-time' licensing fees are merely the estimated future annual "royalty" revenues discounted back to their present values. Once that figure is computed, there have been discounts off of that present value. Hopefully now the discounts are ending.
In the end, by accepting the present value of the expected future annual inflows, you have essentially gained the same thing, but also taken out the risk of unknown future events that could impair payments not yet received.
