Perhaps the "popularity contest" would be over if there were only a thumbs up rating indicating that the post was worthwhile reading or that there was agreement with the poster.

When you see the red thumbs down on posts with "welcome back", apologies to another poster, etc., you just have to know that the mark has nothing whatsoever to do with the message.
