I had an idea along those lines-
Holocom is all about secure computer
systems and there appeared to be a patriot holocom smart card connection posted from several years ago by xthis on RB. Any secure computer would nessarily require a secure access or "smart" card. It doesn't seem like much on the surface but would take on all kinds of significance if a real connection exists or if a relationship has been sustained over time and if Sony were to be involved in some major way.
The Pentagon and Nato purchasing depts are probably
limited in what they can purchase from foreign
suppliers like Sony, but if Sony were the "box"
hardware manufacturer and some combination of
Holocom Patriot Scientific were the "OEM" for that
kind of secure computer market, this tier supply chain
would likely circumvent the domestic supplier
requirement and open the door for Sony to manufacture
indirectly for the US defense market.
I am flying blind on the Holocom efforts in this arena
but can guess that-more than likely- Holocom had plans
to or presumably outsourced much of their mfg to box
manufacturers but this venture likely fell flat due to
poor quality and the venture being underfunded for
such a maasive undertaking (est market of 300K
computers at $4000per). With Sony as the quality hardware supplier and funding fairly plentiful from licensing of the MMP this may be feasible.
The idea would be Patriot Scientific as the
OEM, and Intellasys w/Patriot/TPL IP to supply the
chips (ignite or inflame?) specific to the security
system and Sony to use their resources to manufacture
the computers themselves. It would explain why Sony
got a "pass". If (and this is a decidedly HUGE "if")
this were all lining up behind the scenes- we would
really have something here!
I know that there has been a recent shift at Sony and some
internal strife about Sony mfg base as being an animal
that needs to be fed. They have recently been drawn
to OLPC (one laptop per child) program (est 100million
units/year) and seem to be on the hunt to increase
their volume business somewhat at the expense of their
corporate identity.
Can you imagine if a PTSC/Holocom venture were
finalized and it was followed by announcements by a
"JV" similar to the above to produce hundreds of
thousands of "secure" computer systems? Holy crap!
Imagine Patriot Scientific as an OEM supplying secure computer systems to the Department of Defense. If that were the case I would take back all my wisecracks about the name being too patriotic and too scientific. It all fits together quite nicely - Dontcha think?
