I believe you are incorrect. When you make a short sale, it's just a trade, and that's where the broker makes money (just as in buying long). They don't charge you interest on the borrowed shares.  This based on my limited experience shorting stocks on the NAS/NYSE.  The only time the broker collects interest is when you buy on margin (or use margin account money).

This I'm pretty darned sure of.
