That one wasn't as bad IMO as what came shortly after....the auction of '07 Mustang GT500 #1. For a car you can buy for ~$75K off the showroom floor, it went $100K, then $150K, then in one bid, to $500K (and that one bid was an "up" from the same bidder as the $150K), then to $600K (again, by that same bidder). Talk about people with no respect for money - that guy blew $450K for no apparent reason. He may have had to pay more than $150K had it gone differently, by talk about a "sheesh!".
Though I do watch the auction some, I'm virtually always amazed at what people are willing to pay for what will essentially become a very large museum piece - one of thousands (generally) just like it. If they intend to use them as "drivers", it makes me wonder whether these guys ever owned one "back in the day". I was fortunate enough to own many. In the mid-'70s, they were cheap (got my first '69 Z28 for $1,150 - and it was optioned up). These cars were labor-intensive, with part failure fairly frequent even under "easy" treatment, even then, when they were only a few years old. They were fun, but with a lot of headaches (challenges?). And how many of these cars (though here I'm not really referring to Barrett-Jackson, but local sales of such cars) are authentic? I've caught people trying to sell a '69 Camaro with Z28 emblems as an authentic Z28 (and argued at length about it), but equipped with drum brakes in front, 350 4V with hydralic cam, a Turbo 350 auto, and 10-bolt rear end on mono-leaf springs. And I bet he found a sucker....eventually.
Me? Having sold my '71 Pantera a couple of years ago, I will go after a new Corvette or Mustang GT (Boss 302 coming?), or maybe even the '09 Z28 or Hemi Challenger and get the fun, no headaches, for a lesser cost than an old musclecar - and with the other big plus - no fear of some moron running into me and causing the ultimate headache, replacement (after long arguments with the insurance company!).
But a lot of people apparently think those relics are worth it and potentially much more, and I think PTSC is worth $.54 and potentially much more, so I guess I should criticize! LOL
