I can't quite understanding how someone can judge someone else's beliefs as self-serving when they themselves believe in nothing beyond themselves.

Your secular view of religion is just that -- secular. You cannot see beyond your secular viewpoint because you only have faith in yourself. My prayer is that you will eventually find faith that, in contrast to your faith, is saving and sustaining.
