More than one way to look at today`s news...

1. Sony is an internationally known Company. It is as well known to the consuming and investing public as it is to the professional investment world. When the news of the license signing is made known it will reverberate on Main Street as well as Wall Street. This can only bode well for the reputation (i.e. share price) of PTSC (Max Murphy not withstanding). Certainly Intel and HP are well known industry names but they don`t hold a candle to the power of the significant name and brand power of Sony.
2. We may now know what the ``strategic`` reason was that DP and Leckrone mentioned as the reason that Sony was not included in the Texas filings. It is possible that this was the plan all along, get Sony to sign on and divide and conquer the others. If that was the plan brillant, if it was not the intention at first it still is brillant. The amount of pressure this applies to the J3 in my opinion has increased immeasurably.
3. Leckrone once again in my opinion made only one mistake in repeating, “The MMP Portfolio Licensing Program rewards first movers in their industry sectors with substantial discounts.” This may be just a boilerplate statement of his or it means it may mean that TPL is still offering discounts. If that is the case and I have no reason to doubt his words then it is my opinion with this signing we should now be negotiating with other infringers from a very solid position of strength and offer no more early signer discounts.
4. We may not have to wait for the quarter to end to get some idea of what the license fee is. If DP starts telling us that PTSC has bought back x number of shares at an average price of x . We may be able to estimate that if 10% or so of future revenue (Sony) was used to buyback shares on the open market then we can reverse engineer what the total price of the license was.
Speculation yes, but just a thought.
In any case this was a great way to end the week and begin the quarter. But as a wise man has often said ``we shall see``.
God Bless
