didn`t explain the significance of the honeycomb. The mid-section of the Coronado Bay bridge is designed to float in the event it is knocked down by earthquake or attack. It can then be towed out of the way to prevent the Navy from being bottlenecked at 32nd Street. I am positive San Diego is earthquake prone. If you check, there have been very few significant quakes on the west coast - that is scary in and of itself...
