Correct if I'm wrong but the main purpose of drilling to the Rome formation was to gather a better understanding of the geology in this area since that information was not available in this state.

What they wanted to know is if there is a kind of underground connection that allow oil to connect from one area to another.

If they can find that out, that will allow them to connect to the source and have a better control of productive wells.

Nowaday, they have sophisticated instrument they can get down to read underground formation and, from that information, deduct conclusion as the best path to go.
