Dividends are usually cash but I have heard of employees getting their Christmas bonuses in gold. I met a guy on my last vacation who has received an ounce a year for over 20 years and is holding for his retirement.

The point of my post was that the big board followers look for earnings and cash flow back to the shareholders. Shareholders need to be rewarded, even if the market price has been beaten up, particularly if there is a disjoint between earnings and share price. i.e price is 20x earnings etc.
