Self Interest is not unique here. Very few events such as this with their backers, aren't  about 'self interest'. Which is the reason the US is in Iraq. Cheney was planning the Iraq invasion before 9-11 to "secure the US energy supply" as Bush put it.

The turmoil is good for investments in Oil and Gold if (as you suggest) one lives long enough to enjoy them. Given my druthers I'd opt for less turmoil.
