To answer your other question, when you post a reply (using "reply"), it is to thread. However, there is one neat feature. In the upper right of the box that is each post, there is a "quote" button. If you click on this for a particular post you want to reply to, it will encapsulate that post in your reply. So if you need to be specific who you are replying to, this is the way.
