The mission statement from the FDA web site:
"Statement of FDA Mission
FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety,
efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical
devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.
FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed
innovations that make medicines more effective, safer, and more affordable and
by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to
use medicines and foods to maintain and improve their health. FDA also has
responsibility for regulating the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of
tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by
minors.
Finally, FDA plays a significant role in the Nation’s counterterrorism capability.
FDA fulfills this responsibility by ensuring the security of the food supply and by
fostering development of medical products to respond to deliberate and naturally
emerging public health threats."
The statement as it applies to the drug industry is all about quickly bringing safer, more affordable and more effective drugs to market. Does anyone else find it ironic Afrezza which appears to satify all 3 of the requirements remains mired in FDA red tape? Insulin is readily availabel in many shapes and sizes. What is the hang up?
The link below discusses what is actually in the House version of the PDUFA law that was recently renewed to allow the FDA to continue to operate to approve new drugs. I find the content disturbing to say the least. Government has proven itself to be an abysmal failure as a job creator yet their PDUFA law explicitly refers to "competitiveness and job creation".

IMO getting the FDA involved with either of those aspects of our economy sums up why they are all of a sudden almost totally inept at doing what they are supposed to do in the drug arena. This appears to be a blatant over reach of a government agency.
I would love to get some input on this and purposely posted the topic here instead of the off topic forum since it directly impacts new drug approvals which we need.
