Barrick, Newmont profits top expectations, shares up

* Newmont Q3 EPS $0.79 Vs $0.42 a year-ago

* Shares of both companies rise in early trade

The world's two largest gold producers Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO ) and Newmont Mining Corp (NEM.N ) reported better-than-expected quarterly results on Thursday, driven by higher gold prices and increased sales.

Barrick and its smaller rival Newmont also forecast increased gold production in 2010, sending shares of both companies higher in early trade.
