This is just for info, to describe where Lithium batteries will also be used.
Local train takes first step towards new environmentally friendly battery trains.
After a pre-qualification round, Local train has selected three European train suppliers who will make a final offer for new battery trains for the company. The new battery trains are to replace some of the oldest diesel trains that Lokaltog currently uses in operations in Region Zealand.
Local train LTD, which operates nine different local railways in Region Zealand and Region Capital, has after a pre-qualification round selected three European train suppliers who will make a final offer for new battery trains for the company. The new battery trains are to replace some of the oldest diesel trains that Local train currently uses in operations in Region Zealand.
In total, the tender includes 14 battery-powered electric train sets, which are planned to be part of the daily operation from 2026. It will be decided at a later date when the future new trains will run, but they will be able to be deployed on the Tølløseline, Odsherredsline, Østline and Lollandline . And the switch to electrically powered trains is completely in line with ambitions to ensure a green transformation of train operations in the coming years.
"First of all, there is a very large environmental benefit from switching to battery trains. The current diesel trains that we use in operation emit harmful particles, and we will avoid this by replacing diesel trains with battery trains in the future. In this way, we can contributes to the green transition and the climate agreements that have been concluded between the regions and the state, just as we live up to the goals in our mobility plan. So that in itself is a good reason why we want new trains to run on electricity", explains Lars Wrist-Elkjær, CEO.
Local train's future train type is in practice an electric train that can run under catenary lines on electrified track sections, but the battery means that the trains can continue running when the catenary lines cease and thus be put into operation on track sections that are not electrified.Reduced maintenance and fuel costs
"By investing in new battery trains, our future maintenance costs will decrease, as keeping old diesel trains running is associated with high repair and maintenance costs. At the same time, we reduce fuel costs, as electricity is cheaper than diesel as a fuel, so it is also good business to invest in new and environmentally friendly trains", says Lars-Wrist-Elkjær.
Facts about Lokaltog's range of battery trains
The prequalification round was completed on 7 February, and the three train suppliers who have been chosen to participate in the final tender are:
Siemens Mobility from Germany
Stables from Switzerland
CAF from Spain
The three appointed suppliers submit their final offers at the end of October 2022.
The current offer includes trains that must run in Region Zealand. Lokaltog A/S is also preparing a tender for new battery trains for the Nærumbanen in the Capital Region. This tender is planned to be launched later this year.
The decision to replace part of Lokaltog's older diesel trains has been approved by the regional councils in Region Zealand and Region Hovedstaden respectively in 2021.
