LRAD Corp., of San Diego, now offers an improved version of its long-range acoustic device. The device, which comes in a variety of configurations with ranges up to about 5 miles, broadcasts live or prerecorded voice messages and alarm tones and has been used by U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Iraq to determine the intent of approaching vehicles and to draw enemy fire at night. It can be mounted on ships, vehicles and fixed sites and has been tested on unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ground systems.

"By using highly intelligible, multi-language warnings and commands, LRAD systems are being deployed to help keep our military personnel safe and prevent innocent civilian casualties," LRAD spokesman Robert Putnam said. "In theaters of operation, LRAD systems are creating increased standoff zones, unequivocally determining the intent of security threats at safe distances and limiting the escalation of force by resolving uncertain situations peacefully."

Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System (ILEAS) Use LRAD in Training Exercise

When a tense and possibly violent protesting or rioting situation arises, one group that local police departments can call on for help is the Kane-McHenry Mobile Field Force of an interdepartmental organization known as ILEAS (Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System). It is commanded by Elgin's own Police Sgt. Matt Udelhoven. In the first scenario, the 56 Men in Black (let's call them the MIBs) squared off along one side of the asphalt field while the 81 Young Protesters (YPs) assembled on the other. Using a bullhorn called an LRAD, or Long Range Acoustic Device, the cops' field commander announced that "this has been deemed an unlawful assembly. You have two minutes to disperse or you will be subject to arrest."

"By 2 a.m., as bars began emptying out, revelers began pouring out onto the street. Many of them seemed to walk right out into a rude awakening. Police cars with long range acoustic devices, or LRADs mounted to their hoods, moved slowly north down Harden Street, blasting sounds much louder than sirens. Crowds moved immediately. LRADs Included in Five-Boat NYPD Order

Gladding-Hearn gets five-boat order from NYPD
With over a dozen patrol boats and a fireboat built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding already operating in New York Harbor, the New York Police Department's Harbor Unit turned again to the Massachusetts-based shipyard for five new patrol boats - three 61-footers and two 70-footers.

The two 70-footers, called "Tactical Response" boats, are designed to have the ability to combat terrorists. They have ballistic resistant panels and glass in the superstructure and several non-lethal weapon systems, including a 1,500-gpm water cannon, LRAD (Long Range Acoustical Device) and a laser dazzler. They have a nuclear, biological and chemical filtration system for the accommodations. They also have a knuckle boom crane and deck space to carry a tender and other deck equipment.

LRAD 100X Systems Installed at Palomar Airport for Passenger Safety

Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, California has installed LRAD 100X™ systems to communicate to passengers boarding and deplaning from flights on the tarmac. LRAD's focused broadcasts ensure passengers hear and understand gate and safety instructions over aircraft engine noise.

Prince George County Maryland Using LRADs

The county department is also now using a Long-Range Acoustical Device, or LRAD, a loudspeaker that can be heard from several hundred yards away. It is an upgrade from the standard megaphone, which Eliadis said can be difficult to hear in large crowds.
