Feds to examine infrastructure spending, Ring of Fire ThursdayMINING
By tbnewswatch.com
The federal Liberal Party is beginning discussions this week that will determine regional infrastructure spending priorities, including the Ring of Fire.
Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Patty Hajdu intends to meet with Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi on Thursday for preliminary talks on Northwestern Ontario’s priorities.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has committed running three straight budget deficits to fund an “historic investment” in infrastructure across Canada.
His majority government is under considerable pressure to develop infrastructure into the remote chromite deposit, considering the province has committed $1 billion to such development.
Hajdu was clear that although the national infrastructure plan has yet to take shape, Ontario’s Far North will play a part in the Liberal infrastructure plan.
“Certainly my priority is making sure we do get a healthy share of those infrastructure dollars for Northwestern Ontario because we need it, not just for the ring of fire but connecting the north in general would be a good thing for everybody’s economic development,” she said.
“Right now I have to say, ‘stay tuned.’”
