Message: Someone concerned about "hazardous" chromite

There is a post on the NOT board, with a quote from a person who expresses concern about health & evironmental hazards of chromite mining in the ROF

It should be mentioned that the lady's information about chromite mining and ore is faulty -

She says --"NOBODY has yet done presentations on what the hexavalent chromium will do to our people...why is that? The only thing being presented is bullcrap "there will be zero impacts" from the mining reps. What plans are in place should there be a teain derailment on this propsed rail site? Recently, there was a derailment near a First Nation which spilled crude oil."

The facts are hexavalent chromium is hazardous to health, but isn't generally present in ore. This toxic substance is produced when chrome is processed at high temperatures, as in refining/smelting operations. The ore is not going to be heated before loading on rail and transported out of the ROF area. In the state as produced from mining operations it is far less hazardous than crude oil, so that a spill from a derailment will be no more hazardous than a spill of crushed granite or other construction aggregate.

This substance may be produced during the KWG patented chromite reduction process, but this will be at another location where adequate measures will be in place to contain any emissions. Since this process uses a lower temperature than other current competitive methods, it is likely the amount of hexavalent chrome produced will be less than in those other methods.

Of course, all my own opinions.
