Two years ago, Gull Bay First Nation had a healthy million dollar surplus.

Now, the northern Ontario community is almost broke and its books are in a mess.

Chief Wilfred King was in charge when the finances were healthy, but he lost the election and left office for two years.

He was reelected in January.

King says that while he was away, the band’s general accounts were drained.

Even the welfare accounts had a shortfall.

APTN’s Matt Thordarson visited the community to find out what went wrong and how residents are coping.
